Hello new friends! I’m so glad you’ve found your way to my little harp/composer corner of the internet! 🙋
I’m Danielle, a harpist and new music advocate. I don’t compose myself, but I LOVE working with people who do!
During my undergraduate studies at The University of North Texas, most of my friends were composers and I discovered the incredible experience of performing brand new music.
At the same time, I also dealt with a lot of performance anxiety. New music performance completely changed my perspective.
Performing brand new music is less about extreme perfection and more about a partnership with a *living* composer to create a new experience for an audience. I’ve been able to utilize this mindset when performing older, standard repertoire as well.
As I continued to collaborate with more composers after college, a big obstacle was the lack of accessibility to understanding the instrument. The literature on harp writing is limited and there’s a lot of inconsistencies in the repertoire, even by composers who are also harpists!
I created this account to primarily discuss writing for the harp, share tips and guidelines, and offer tutorials. I also discuss other new music topics, such as audience accessibility, and share practicing and performing tips!
I also love coffee and mountain biking, in that order.
I’d love to meet you too! Introduce yourself in the comments! Where are you from? What do you do? What’s your favorite morning beverage? (the only correct answer is coffee, obviously!)
